Pillars of the Earth by Ken FollettThis was another book mentioned in a sermon by my pastor. The story basically centers around a master mason and his family in 12th century England.
Other plots include the social a political life of a monastery, the political and religious interactions between the Catholic Church and the Monarchy and the building of a cathedral. All the characters in the various plots weave in and out in a masterful way.
The book is a massive tome - almost 1000 pages but it is the best depiction of life in this time period that I have ever read. If you ever are prompted to look at an ancient cathedral and wonder "How did they do that?" This might be a good book for you to read.
Life in this time period was not easy and the book is not one you would term uplifting but still, even though it is fiction, I feel like I possibly have a better understanding of the time period.

PILLARS OF THE EARTH is one of my favorite books. The "sequel", WORLD WITHOUT END, was published recently and takes place 200 years later in the same town. Another worthy read, similar in style to Pillars.
