Easy as Falling Out of an Airplane

Most of us have been at an event where a parachutist comes sailing in with smoke trailing from their boots. Here is a first-hand look at all that goes on during the decent. I am amazed by the fact that the jumper is apparently working all the way down.

An shoot-dang effin he dint nail that gall-dern target down thar . . .

Iron Man

The Kona Iron Man race held in Hawaii is the pinnacle of triathlons. It was started by a husband and wife team in 1978 and consists of a 2.4 mile swim, 112 mile bike ride and a 26.2 mile marathon.

In 1979, their then 16-year-old son, Michael Collins, convinced his parents to let him participate in the second annual Iron Man Triathlon.

Through a comedy of errors, it took him 24 hours to complete the race. One of the best things in the podcast is when Michael Collins, after 20+ hours, is "running" the marathon leg of the race and he sees a paperboy delivering the morning paper. He realizes that those newspapers are probably carrying the results of the race that he was still running . . . .

As the interviewer said, "When you measure you race results by a calender instead of a watch . . . you know you have had a bad day . . ."

It's a great story and worth a listen . . . .

How do You Celebrate Your 101st Birthday?

By running the london marathon, of course.

From The Final Sprint:
Buster Martin, 101, plans to run the London Marathon and celebrate with a pint and a cigarette when it’s over.

The Military's Amazon.com

A gal at the office is an Army reservist who served one tour in Iraq.

I have been thinking about buying a new pair of hiking boots and I figured if anyone ought to have comfortable hiking boots - it would be the Army.

When I asked her about it, she said, "Oh sure - you can order them online".

Wha? . . .

Then she brought in a catalogue of all this gear anyone can order online. It was fascinating to me. They sell everything from camping cots and water filters to specialized holsters and slings for your firearms.

The website is Ranger Joe's.

It also occured to me that some of the stuff they sell would make great camping gear.

Quote of the Day

Far better is it to dare mighty things, to win glorious triumphs, even though checkered by failure... than to rank with those poor spirits who neither enjoy much nor suffer much, because they live in a gray twilight that knows not victory nor defeat.

- Theodore Roosevelt
