It has been said time and time again but I am here to tell you that it's true - Plan 9 from Outer Space is the single worst movie ever made. A friend of mine loaned this movie to me and I have half a mind (to borrow a phrase from Lileks) to kick him in the "yarbles" when I see him next.
"What makes it so bad?", you ask. It's almost unexplainable. First of all the story is just plain stupid - aliens come to earth to stop humans from developing a bomb that will destroy the universe. Their first 8 plans failing, they resort to "Plan 9" - resurrect the dead to kill the living until the earthlings give the aliens a fair hearing.
The sets are terrible - the dialogue is worse - but neither of those are a match for the sheer nails-on-chalkboard level of acting. It is as if your local high school had written, produced, directed and starred in their own sci-fi film.
But what makes it truly horrific is that it is just barely watchable. An unwatchable film could not possibly be the worst film of all time because, well, it's unwatchable. We actually watched this one to the pathetic end.
There is, however, one redeeming quality. I discovered that Elvira was not an original character but a knock-off of Vampira who actually stars in the film.

Highly recommened - if only because misery loves company.
