Soul Food - 7/15/8

From today's reading: 1 Samuel 15-20, Psalm 59

But Samuel replied:

"Does the LORD delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices
as much as in obeying the voice of the LORD ?
To obey is better than sacrifice,
and to heed is better than the fat of rams.

For rebellion is like the sin of divination,
and arrogance like the evil of idolatry.
Because you have rejected the word of the LORD,
he has rejected you as king."

- 1 Samuel 15:22-23

When they arrived, Samuel saw Eliab and thought, "Surely the LORD's anointed stands here before the LORD."

But the LORD said to Samuel, "Do not consider his appearance or his height, for I have rejected him. The LORD does not look at the things man looks at. Man looks at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart."

- 1 Samuel 16:6-7

But I will sing of your strength,
in the morning I will sing of your love;
for you are my fortress,
my refuge in times of trouble.

O my Strength, I sing praise to you;
you, O God, are my fortress, my loving God.

- Psalm 59:16-17

Points of Interest:

1 Samuel, Chapter 17 tells the well-known story of David and Goliath

Chapters 18-20 tell of the remarkable friendship between Jonathan, the son of Saul,(the current king) and David, the one who will ultimately rule instead of Jonathan. Their relationship is held up as one of the closest friendships in all of the Bible - two of the more memorable passages being; 1 Samuel 20:12-17 and 20:41-42
