Last night the furnace kicked on for the first time since April. Fall is here. Or if not here, has parked out front and is walking up the path to the door. Just as well.
In my opinion, summer just got belligerent a week ago. Are you kidding me? 103 on Saturday - 103 on Sunday - 107 on Monday? Its as if you had a long-time, much-loved friend over for dinner who had just two or three drinks too many, got loud, opinionated and started dominating the party (guilty btw). "Hey! You! Summer! That's enough - pack it up and go home. We all love you very much but its time for a break. Call us in 6 months or so."
The wife and I actually installed a mister system on the deck and retreated from the house-turned-oven to sleep in a tent in the back-yard Monday and Tuesday night. At one point, I entered the house around 2:30am and a wave of heat hit me as I opened the door.
But that was last weekend's adventures. Ten day forecast? 80-84-85-79-80-78-76-77-78-77
Looks like summer is going to come staggering up the drive tomorrow looking for his sunglasses. "They're on your head you goofus - go home! Sober up! See you next May!"
Some friends of ours were playing a gig at Humphrey's Friday night but we opted out. You gotta turn stuff down every now and again just to keep your sanity.
Saturday was spent indoors doing the weekly fluff-fold and scour. I am glad to report that we got the spit-and-polish portion out of the way soon enough that we actually had time to hang some blinds on the bedroom window and install the new smoke detector. Do all things electrical have to talk now?
SCREECH! SCREECH! SCREECH!
"I say, lovey, now what could that ear-drum-shattering sound possibly mean?"
"WARNING! FIRE! WARNING! FIRE!"
"Well, what do you know, it must be the smoke detector."
It also warns you of carbon-monoxide just in case you happen to park your car in the living room and leave the engine running.
You know what would impress me? A talking smoke detector that says. "Bing! Your toast is burning!" or how about, "Bing! You know your wife doesn't let you smoke cigars in the house!"
But no - toast, cigar or conflagration, all we get is SCREECH! SCREECH! SCREECH! WARNING! FIRE! WARNING! FIRE!
Which reminds me, I need to pop the batteries out . . .
Saturday evening we went to an art opening in North-Park for one of our college buddies. Believe me, David Adey has what it takes to be very successful. If art interests you at all, keep an eye on him.
Sunday was a reprise of Saturday only outside. And I am happy to report that we got the clip-and-trim portion out of the way soon enough that we were able to begin work on the Great Retaining Wall Project in the front yard.
Dinner on Sunday? Pot Roast!
It was the kind of weekend that makes you not want to go back to work on Monday.
