"When Laban had gone to shear his sheep, Rachel stole her father's household gods."
- Genesis 31:19
Point of Interest:
Monotheism was very rare around 1500 BC. Usually, the people of a town or region worshipped a god who protected them in battle. They then also worshipped various other deities for crops, rain, fertility, finding lost car keys etc.
Often these deities were represented as wooden or clay sculptures - larger ones for the home, smaller ones for travel.
All througout the Old Testament, as the Israelites find themselves faced with polytheistic cultures, there is a constant lure from monotheism to polytheism.
