Points of Interest:
When you see the word "God" in the NIV, it is the translation of the Hebrew word "Elohim", which is a generic term for God.
When you see the word "LORD" all capitalized in the NIV, it is the translation of the Hebrew word "Yahweh" which is the proper name for the God of the Bible meaning "He is" (Exodus 3:11-14)
When the Bible refers to "kings" - think "mayor". Most of the kings in the Bible are not kings in the Buckingham Palace fashion. Instead, they are usually the king of their particular town or city - sometimes a collection of cities.
In Genesis 9:18, we read that Shem was one of the sons of Noah. It is from his name that we get the term "Semites"
In Genesis 10:24 we read that a great-grandson of Shem's was named Eber. It is from his name that the term "Hebrew" comes from
In Genesis 14:18 we read about Melchizedek, the first person named as a "priest of God Most High". While it has always been customary in all religions to give gifts and offerings to the local deity-de-jour in the hopes of keeping it happy, vs 20 is the first mention in the Bible of giving 10% to the priest.
