Leave a Penny Take a . . . Oh, just LEAVE a Penny

Pennies can be frustrating. For one, they are so ubiquitous - when was the last time you walked more than 100 yards without encountering the desecrated image of Lincoln underfoot and imbedded in a wad of chewing gum?

"Why can't we just get rid of them?" is the familiar refrain. And do what? Go to multiples of 5? All that would serve is to make the nickle the new object of scorn. You think it's bad carrying around a bunch of pennies? Try nickles. They weigh, like, twice as much!

I only bring this up to say it could be worse. Burma (or Myanmar) has been in the news quite a bit lately. Apparently, the country has two names and monks are marching in the streets and being arrested and/or shot by military folks.

Sound bizarre? Try this one - their fiscal year starts on April 1st (that's right - April Fool's Day). And with good reason - their monetary policy is based on multiples of . . . . . wait for it . . . . . . NINE.

"You know get this, ten years ago Burma's top general made a bizarre currency decision. He introduced new bills, all multiples of nine. It was a lucky number according to his astrologer."

That would mean that gumballs would be 27 cents.

The entire economy has been built around the idea of the 99 cent store.

No wonder the monks are so pissed . . . .
