Our mind, it seems, is more pleased with universals: never-broken, always-applicable rules and patterns that allow us to predict and control things. This is good for science, but lousy for religion.

The second half of that quote embodies so much of how I feel about parenting. Sure, boundaries are good, and okay, sometimes consequences are necessary, but most often, I want to know why my kid is doing what she's doing, to really listen to her, to be actively deepening our relationship.
I've been thinking an awful lot about parenting these days and how it intersects with my faith. This quote is really great.
