The Rubber Room
By some estimates there are approximately 700 teachers in the New York Public School system being paid their full salary to sit in a room for 6 hours a day, 5 days a week and do absolutely nothing.
When I heard this story on This American Life, I found myself getting more frustrated minute by minute. Paid to do nothing sounds attractive at first, but then it turns into a dehumanizing state of limbo, sometimes lasting for years. Terrible non-solution.
