The saints reveal to other men what a man can be; they smash the body to atoms and come forth a living flame with a body newly refreshed; they unearth the hidden beauty in human beings who have been passed over as the waste product of humanity and they thread together on one golden cord of the love of God virtues whose existence was scarcely known, whose combination seemed incredible, ardor and patience, meekness and power, detachment and affection, lowly hope and high humility. But above all, the saints possess some secret of peace, as if, like the successful lover, they were in possession of their heart's desire, and in this fulfillment some joy sang within them to which all their faculties made response. They are not lonely or stoical; they are well acquainted with sorrow and they embrace pain, but everywhere they go they are accompanied by the sunshine of spring.
